This tool is for DMs who are tired of spending an hour generating a monster or NPC only to see their players kill it in a few brief rounds of combat. Using this monster generator, a DM can create a 20th level Stone Giant fighter in a minute or two or 3rd level Drider cleric in just a few seconds. Allowing you, the GM, to either experiment to find the right monster to really challenge your party or simply use the time you save creating monsters to write more adventures.

The monster and NPC generators follows all the rules of D&D 3.5 for creating monsters with classes and NPCs. So the monsters / NPC you create with this tool are just as good as the ones you would create by hand. The results can be printed out directly from the web page or use the plain text option to cut & paste the monster into your adventure.

The tool is easy to use. Simply select the monster and optionally select its classes, levels and its skill focus. The focus controls how the monster's / NPCs skill points are used, ensuring that your monster / NPC has the right skills to terrorise your party. Special attacks and class abilities are allocated automatically but the monster generator / NPC generator lets the GM select the feats. Monsters / NPCs also start with their default weapons and attacks but these can be changed, as can the monster's ability scores and size.

Once you are happy with your changes press the RECALCLATE button to see how the changes effect the monster.

The monster generator and NPC Generator are free to use and supplied "as is". If you have any questions or problems, please write to us: CONTACT (at) DinglesGames (dot) com.

    Hi Paul,

When I select masterwork (or magical) armor and/or shield, its not adjusting the armor-check penalty down by 1 for each item (full plate and heavy shield still at -8, should be -6 if both are masterwork). Also, it did not include magical bonuses to AC for either item (this has only recently occurred). Also, I couldn’t find Mounted Combat on the list of bonus Fighter feats?

    Cheers
    Jeremy

  3. jezzakstyles says:

PS: It was also not including magical bonus for weapons on attack/damage rolls.

    Cheers
    Jeremy

  4. admin says:

Hi jezzakstyles, Thanks again for reporting, I was not calculating the armor check adjustment for magic shields at all. Should be fixed now. There was also a bug where if you added magic armor and then took it off the magic bonus was left on the calculation, mow fixed.
I can’t find anything wrong with magic weapons though.
    Cheers
    Paul

  5. admin says:

Jeremy, did you sort out the cookie problem?

  6. jezzakstyles says:

Yep, that problem’s all sorted out, and thanks for putting the log-on at the top. I’ve also noticed that quite often when I advance HD on a monster (mostly home-brew monsters I’ve set up myself), it just defaults to the old skill-ranks, even though the available skill-ranks at the top has updated??
These are just small bugs, it’s still the best 3.5 & Pathfinder tool anywhere.
    Cheers
    Jeremy

  7. jezzakstyles says:

    Hi Paul,
Would it be possible for you to add the following spells (or at least some of them) to the Buffing Spells Precast tool: Blur, Displacement, Divine Favor, Divine Power, Enlarge Person, Entropic Shield, Good Hope, Holy Aura/Unholy Aura, Magic Circle against Chaos/Evil/Good/Law, Magic Vestment, Mirror Image, Protection from Chaos/Evil/Good/Law, Protection from Energy, Resist Energy, Righteous Might, Spell Resistance, and Stoneskin.
Any chance of adding the Archmage prestige class any time soon?
    Cheers - Jeremy

  8. admin says:

Hi jezzakstyles, Divine Favor and Divine Power are on the list but only if you select a cleric/paladin as they have Personal range cannot be cast on another.
I’ll look at adding the rest.
I’ve added the mounted combat feats to the fighter feats.
    Cheers
    Paul

  9. Angelus says:

Hey, is there a way that you could give us a Template mod? I miss the Shade template from Forgotten Realms. If a mod is created I’d be happy to fill out the data.

  10. admin says:

Hi Angelus, I don’t have the stats for a shade. I can add the special abilities into the data base if you tell me what they are
    Paul

  11. jamesafridelle says:

I’m not sure how to make this work.
I purchased the 3-month membership and then registered w that same email that I purchased with. Am I supposed to do something else to get the level cap raised?

  12. admin says:

    Hi jamesafridelle
Here is a link on how to activate your membership.

  13. jamesafridelle says:

    Worked. Thank you!

  14. Angelus says:

Sure, I can provide stats. Any email I can send it to?

  15. admin says:

    Hi Angelus,
    I’ve sent you an e-mail

    Paul

  16. jezzakstyles says:

    Hi Paul,

Could you please include the following skills in the ADD A SKILL drop-down box for NPC Generator (Appraise, Balance, Concentration, Decipher Script, Forgery, Gather Information, Hide, Move Silently, Open Lock, Search, Sleight of Hand, Speak Language, Spot, Tumble, & Use Rope).

    Cheers
    Jeremy

  17. admin says:

Hi jezzakstyles, I was displaying the pathfinder skill set in the D&D 3.5 generator, should now be fixed, thanks for telling me.
    Cheers
    Paul

  18. admin says:

    Hi jezzakstyles
I’ve just fixed a bug where magic armor, shields, and weapons were not adding their in bonuses when specials had been added to them. This was because I had not defined the specials to the database properly. I think this is probably what you were pointing out earlier.
    Paul

  19. jezzakstyles says:

    Hi Paul,

Just noticed that the BAB for Animal Companions is not increasing for the extra HD gained (base saves are OK), and the extra feats aren’t always correct (e.g. 9 base HD animal has 4 feats, +6 HD for druid level should result in 2 extra feats, but only 1 gained - Evasion & Multiattack are not part of the standard feat advancement; same thing happened with Wolf 2 HD base +12 HD for druid, only gained option for 2 extra feats?).
Still an awesome tool. Love the deflection-bonus to AC option & short-print facility as well.

    Cheers
    Jeremy

  20. jezzakstyles says:

    Hi Paul,

Any chance of including an option ( Add/Edit Monster) for racial-bonuses to skills. A lot of my home-brew critters have racial-bonuses, they max out the skills, then I have to manually adjust it after copy/paste to my document. You could have it as an option beneath the Skills bar, and a text/description drop-down would be handy (as some of the modifiers only apply under certains conditions, terrain, etc.). It doesn’t have to be for just racial-bonuses either, circumstance/insight/luck and other types could be included.
Also, any chance of adding the Archmage prestige class; I’m running a fairly high-powered level 17 campaign at present, and this one would be very handy!!

    Cheers
    Jeremy

  21. bsu412 says:

Hey first off just want to say love the site it saves so much time! However I can’t seem to get the Size option on the 3.5 creator to work for most monsters. It works for animals e.g. ape but not for anything else.
    Am I using it wrong?

  22. admin says:

    Hi jezzakstyles,
I’ve put in some changes for animal companions, let me know if you find any more problems.
I’ll add the Archmage soon prob over the weekend.
I’ll think about the skills might need a quite a bit of a change.
    Cheers
    Paul

  23. admin says:

    Hi bsu412,
I think I’ve broken the ability when I added the enlarge spell. Got the spell working but broke the size increase button. I’ll get it fixed soon.
    Paul

  24. admin says:

    Hi bsu412,
I think I’ve fixed the change size problem now. I did release a change which broke the size for animals, hopefully now the animal, enlarge person and changing the size all work.
    Paul

  25. admin says:

    Hi jezzakstyles,
The Archmage should be working now. You’ll have to adjust the spell forfeits manually at present though.
    Paul

  26. jezzakstyles says:

    Hi Paul,

Thanks adding the Archmage prestige class so quickly; everything seems OK with it.
I noticed that the Scimitar does not include 18-20 critical threat range on Plain Text Version, can you correct this in future?

    Cheers
    Jeremy

  27. admin says:

    Hi jezzakstyles,
The Scimitar should be OK now, keep up the good work reporting anything you find
    Cheers
    Paul

  28. johnstan says:

Hey, I’m trying to create a basic orc with no changes but I get this error message: “This Monster requires a class and level as it is only a template (it is set up with 0 hit die)” but I’m pretty sure I already did this successfully in the past without adding a class. Is this a bug?

  29. admin says:

Hi Johnstan, the basic orc in the monster manual is a 1st level warrior. Just give the orc a level of warrior and you will get a basic orc.

  30. pupone says:

i would like to by for ever, but i have a question :
    1) is only in english ? (italian ?)
    2) im self can change the language of this site ? there is the option ?
    Thank you for your attenption-
    Answer in my mail please.
    Pupone

  31. pupone says:

    ok answer here….is same!
But answer please or not buy…

  32. admin says:

    Hi Pupone,
I’m afraid this site is only available in English, and there is no option to change the language.
Your best option is to use google translation, but I doubt it would translate the D&D stuff too well.

    Paul

  33. pupone says:

do y think in future add this option, only for the primary word. es power attack > attacco poderoso> only translate this, not complete result. t y bye

  34. admin says:

    Hi Pupone,
Maybe a translation facility will be available at a later date, but not anytime soon. I think I have enough work to do on the site for the next few months. I will think about how it can be done though.
    Paul

  35. itsumoryu says:

So I’ve noticed that this says it’s a D&D 3.5 NPC generator but it is using spells and the spell progression from Pathfinder. Also the skill points, at least for wizard, are from Pathfinder.

So is this a D&D 3.5 or a Pathfinder NPC generator?

  36. admin says:

    Hi itsumoryu,
The spell progression is the same for Pathfinder and 3.5 as is the skill points progression (2 for a wizard +1/level if human). The starting skill points differ though 3.5 = *4 at first level.
The spell list does include Pathfinder spells (there is only one spell list I haven’t split the spells up between Pathfinder and 3.5.)
This is a 3.5 Generator the Pathfinder Generator uses a different code but they do share some features. It fact all the data tables apart from the spell list have been separated between 3.5 and Pathfinder.

  37. markllane says:

I could have used the swarms added for the adventure I am running. Our group plays 3.5 D&D, but all the new adventures (including the one I am running) are 4.0. I don’t think I could have done the translation without this site. Thanks.

  38. jezzakstyles says:

    Hi Paul,
Oops, thanks for the ‘heads up’ (it was the first time I’ve used it to create a Barbarian).
Thanks for all of your help as I realise you’re pretty damn busy managing this site.
PS- any chance of adding Aura as a spcial quality AND as a special atk (you only have Aura of Menace).
    Cheers
    Jeremy

  39. JKeller360 says:

Hi. New user here. Just bought lifetime rights, one request I have right off the bat, please list page number and book for spells. Some of the spells in your 3.5 list I do not recognize. (I do own a decent selection yet I’ve never seen them)

  40. JKeller360 says:

Me again, I tried to make a basic human with a flaming burst weapon (3.5 again). I noticed that it only seems to relay that information at the end of the long text description under magical weapons, any way I can apply that to the NPC/Creature’s attack? In other words can I have that be a bit more obvious when I’m glancing at an NPC’s attack statistics?

  41. admin says:

Hi JKeller360, Some of the new spells are from the Pathfinder Rule books. I haven’t split the spells up between Pathfinder and 3.5 yet
I’ll look into adding the magic item description to the attack (or maybe adding a small description)
    Cheers
    Paul

When you “Recalculate” a mob using the D&D 3.5 NPC Generator, I’ve found that the Base Attack gets re-added with each recalculations instead of staying the same. Thanks for a great tool.

  43. admin says:

Hi captainbill47 I’ve now fixed the ever increasing mob problem, thanks for reporting
    Cheers
    Paul

  44. captainbill47 says:

Thank a lot. Ready for another Mob problem? :) When giving the base creature a class like fighter, etc it gives me the option for Exotic Weapon Proficiency, but does not give options for Simple or Martial Weapon Proficiency, nor does it give options for the various Armor or Shild Proficiencies.

While I’m at it, giving the Mob’s base creature class levels also looks a little wonky to me. Ex: A single class only defaults to one level, no matter how many levels I choose. Changing it and recalculating does not help/work/fix this. Then, going back and adding a second class does seem to allow for the extra levels chosen. Natural weapons only get one attack, but putting a weapon in the base creatures hands gives it 5+ attacks. For example:
Human Warrior[1] Fighter[10] w/ Exotic Weap Prof and Bolas gives it a Full Attack line of:
    Full Attack:+37/32/27/22/17/12/7
That kind of makes (logical) sense for a mob to have a bunch of attacks since it’s a mob and the base attack is large. But if I change it to a natural weapon like Pincer, I get:
    Full Attack:+37
As a mob multiple pincers seems like it would work more like the weapons, but NOW the weapon is being treated as though it’s just a mob attack like crush and only giving 1 attack at a large bonus.

Ok, that’s enough nit picking for today. :) Thanks again for a wonderful tool. Sorry I keep breaking it. :P

  45. admin says:

    Hi captainbill47
mobs are meant to be for a crowd of low level critters, or a herd of large animals, a mob of 10th level fighters is not a mob. I think mobs attack like swarms i.e they attack every thing that they swamp doing an automatic 4d8 damage.
Mobs should not be given weapons as a mobs damage is from all types of weapons, kicking, biting stabbing crushing etc.
Here is a bit of a discussion on mobs that may be helpful

  46. Angelus says:

Is there a way we can make new prestige classes? (3.5ed)

  47. admin says:

    Hi Angelus,
There is no way at present you can create your own prestige classes
    Paul

  48. captainbill47 says:

Would you be willing to add some of the “additional” Psion races like Synads, Kalashtars, etc? :) If you had a template or file format you use to add races, classes, etc, I’d be happy to email you the formatted info in files for ease of adding. :)

  49. admin says:

    Hi captainbill47,
I don’t think the additional races are part of the SRD so I don’t think I’m allowed to add them into the generator (They are copyrighted by Wizards of the Coast). Here is a link to the Psionic Races covered in the SRD http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/psionicRacesClassesSkillsSpells.htm
If it’s in the SRD I can use it.
    Cheers,
    Paul

  50. captainbill47 says:

    Can we add Janni?
    http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Janni
This looks to be part of the SRD, right?
As stated before, if you have a specific file format you use to easily add creatures/etc to your database, I’d be happy to send the info to you in that manner…
