This tool is for DMs who are tired of spending an hour generating a monster or NPC only to see their players kill it in a few brief rounds of combat. Using this monster generator, a DM can create a 20th level Stone Giant fighter in a minute or two or 3rd level Drider cleric in just a few seconds. Allowing you, the GM, to either experiment to find the right monster to really challenge your party or simply use the time you save creating monsters to write more adventures.

The monster and NPC generators follows all the rules of D&D 3.5 for creating monsters with classes and NPCs. So the monsters / NPC you create with this tool are just as good as the ones you would create by hand. The results can be printed out directly from the web page or use the plain text option to cut & paste the monster into your adventure.

The tool is easy to use. Simply select the monster and optionally select its classes, levels and its skill focus. The focus controls how the monster's / NPCs skill points are used, ensuring that your monster / NPC has the right skills to terrorise your party. Special attacks and class abilities are allocated automatically but the monster generator / NPC generator lets the GM select the feats. Monsters / NPCs also start with their default weapons and attacks but these can be changed, as can the monster's ability scores and size.

Once you are happy with your changes press the RECALCLATE button to see how the changes effect the monster.

The monster generator and NPC Generator are free to use and supplied "as is". If you have any questions or problems, please write to us: CONTACT (at) DinglesGames (dot) com.

    Paul,

My thoughts would be to add a radio box or something type of “toggling” feature for metamagic feats, to minimize list lengths. I think in terms of deciding whether a feat can be applied to a spell maybe should be left up to the user. Less work for you then.

  2. admin says:

    Hi Mnevill,
I’ve now added in metamagic spells to the spell lists. You need to press recalculate after you enter the feat for the extra spells to appear.
PS the ranges and description of the spells remain unchanged, so you will have to make any adjustments yourself.

    Paul

  3. josha says:

    when will pathfinder be done?

  4. admin says:

    Hi Josha,
The Pathfinder is a bit more complicated than I first thought. I’m half way through the characters, so will still be a few more weeks I’m afraid.
    Paul

  5. mike says:

Question sometimes when I’m setting up a npc I push recalculate like after picking spells the generator goes back to the main page and I have to start over on that npc how can I stop it from doing that?

  6. admin says:

    Hi Mike
I’ve only had this problem when I’ve left the computer for a while on the page and it times out. I would suggest pressing recalc now and again to refresh the page, also save the NPC if you are leaving the computer for a while.
    Paul

  7. Becker says:

Hey, I was wondering if you could add the Astral Deva from the MM1 to the list of monsters. Thanks!

  8. mnevill says:

    Hi Paul,

I just realized something that hasn’t been implemented, which could be useful, which is a “age” category for NPCs. I’m wanting to generate a middle aged human rogue/ranger, and just realized that I’ll need to manually adjust the abilities so they come out right. A button which does that ahead of time would be cool.

  9. Jordan says:

I’d recommend adding a Gestalt option.

  10. Nonei says:

I use the generator all the time. I would love to see a “simple” or basic generator to quickly make a group of generic NPCs - I’m talking about the kind of NPCs that will only see the light of day for 3 rounds if they’re lucky.

For example, the races list might only include the most common humanoids. For class, you might choose the class and then, for example, for fighter you might have a choice of ‘archer’ or ‘melee’ or ’sword and board’; for wizard or sorcerer you might have choices of ‘mostly damage spells’ or ‘mostly illusion/enchantment’ etc.

Then the generator would bring up the stats with the most likely feats in a progression already selected, perhaps even weapon selected (that’s easy enough to edit), spells already picked based on the selection, etc. That would be my ideal generator for those poor NPCs!

  11. hoverfrog says:

I agree with Nonei. A quick ‘cannon fodder’ option would be very useful.

In addition there are lists of feats from a variety of sources available. I tend to dip in and out of source books so might have an NPC with feats from Libre Mortis and Eberron Campaign Setting for example. If you are adding other source books then having an option to choose them early on would be great.

I’m not criticising BTW, I think that the tools you’ve made are great but you did ask for suggestions. ;)

Having an option to generate a themed NPC\monster party quickly would also be useful. Want a Necromancer with a Barbarian bodyguard and a bunch of skeleton gnolls? That would be great.

  12. worthing says:

I’ve gotta say this is a great generator. I’m curious, though, on how stats are figured. I’ve been testing just a plain old human fighter, and the base stats seem to have other numbers added to them. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

one suggestion I would do is leave the stats out completely, and let the user select them, and make any bonuses from race be statically listed (it looks like this is possible, as you have the stats setup as a dropdown list with a static +0 next to it).

  13. admin says:

    Hi worthing,
I use elite stats for the PC classes i.e 15,14,13,12,10,8 the stats get allocated depending on what skill focus you select. E.g. a light archer will have a higher dex than a heavy foot soldier. The stats also get adusted for the level (a +1 per 4 levels)
    Paul

  14. David says:

This is an excellent tool. Saves so much time. One thing that would be great is the option to export to a table as well as plain text. If the values each had a cell, it would make it easy to copy/paste the info into a spreadsheet-based character sheet. Anyone with a sheet setup that uses the d20 system could easily add pointers to an page where this stuff could be pasted in.

Even without that though, it’s way faster to copy my stuff in than to have to build them all myself. Thanks for making this!

  15. mike says:

Alot of the npc’s I set up when I go to update them it flips me back to the main page before I print them off Why?

  16. admin says:

    Hi Mike,
Have you got cookies enabled? I use cookies to store monster information and who you are.
    Paul

  17. Sweetylnumb says:

    Hi mike
Awesome generator, me and my friends have great fun with this and its really convienant. I was wondering if you could add Warlock to the possible classes? i find it a difficult class to make and i know its ph2 but just a suggestion!

  18. Fiar'la says:

    Warlock class please :D

  19. admin says:

Sorry Fiar’la but the warlock class was not released as pard of the SRD so I can’t use it
    Paul

  20. could you perhaps include other classes/prestige classes?
Or alternitivly perhaps include a non-SRD class generator.
    thanks.

  21. admin says:

    Hi Poisoned Misery
Which other prestige classes were you after?
    Paul

  22. some from the Complete series, ie Complete Arcane-Blood Magus, etc.

  23. admin says:

    Hi Poisoned Misery,
I can only safely do SRD material. I am thinking of allowing people to set up there own classes but it is alot of work.
I’m working on Psionics classes at present, Psion and Psychic Warrior.
    Paul

  24. Moschops says:

    Love this tool.

There’s only one thing I’d really like to see, and that’s the ability to output not just raw text, but text with HTML (or maybe BB code or XML) tags to make a pretty. printable and post-able stat block.

    Thanks for the great tool!

  25. Thanks_from_Germany says:

This tool is just great, thanks for all this amazing work you’ve done. This really helps a lot in my campaign!

  26. Jake says:

Would you accept paypal for this? I really like the builder!

  27. admin says:

    Hi Jake,
Yes you can pay by paypal just donate the money and then e-mail me at paul@dinglesgames.com with your login id and I’ll set you up manually
    Paul

  28. graywolf7902000 says:

I love the tools here. That being said, I was having a problem with the npc generator. I was making a doppelganger monk/fighter assassin, and when I was picking its feats, it wouldn’t let me pick the fighter feats. Thought I’d let you know.

  29. admin says:

    Hi graywolf7902000,
thanks for reporting the error. I’d introduced it when I’d added the epic levels. (a missing bracket in SQL).
I’ve now made a fix so you can now finish that nasty doppelganger.
    Paul

  30. admin says:

I’m not using the generator (not running a game) at the moment so if people do find an error let me know or else I’ll not be able to fix it.
    Paul

  31. Boric G. says:

Has the NPC Generator been limited to 5 levels for non-registered users? I thought I had in the past been able to do a full range of levels, but when I tried today I was limited to 5.

  32. admin says:

    Hi Boric G,
Yes I’ve put a limit of 5 levels per class. I’m trying to make some money out of the site so I can spend more time developing it.
    Paul

  33. Boric G. says:

Perfectly understandable. I’ve been wanting to sign up anyway.

  34. ko-ryu says:

    Hi,
I paid for 3 months today, but still cannot create npcs beyond class lv 5. help pls.
    regards ko-ryu

  35. admin says:

    Hi Ko-ryu,
You are not the first to have trouble with the checkout. Have a read of this

If you still have problems let me know and I’ll set you up manually.
    Paul

  36. J_furlong says:

Will you ever do a template for a Paladins mount? Perhaps also templates for Animal Companions and Familiars?
    James

  37. admin says:

    Hi J_furlong,
The Paladin mount template is now there.
    Animal Companions soon.
    Paul

  38. J_furlong says:

That was admirably swift! Definately pleased I bought that membership.

Another question, would you perhaps consider making the Generator so that feats and spells are randomly selected immediately, or have ’standard’ builds already selected that can then be adapted? I dont know if that would be an easy thing to do or not, but its something I’d like to see. It’d really speed things up, and be especially useful when creating an NPC on the fly for a class you’ve not played.
Could it perhaps be tied in with the skill system you already have? awarding that npc with feats/spells appropriate to their skillset?

  39. admin says:

    Hi J_furlong,
A default list of spells and feats is a good idea I’ll give it some thought. It may appear in the next month.
    Paul

  40. admin says:

    Hi J_furlong,
    I’ve now added animal companions
    Paul

  41. admin says:

I think I’ve fixed the “Web page has expired” problem when pressing “Return” on the Plain Text Version” page. If any one find any problems let me know,
    Paul

  42. Andrew says:

    Paul,
I love the site! Glad to see 3.5 is still out there and being given the love it’s due ;)

Thanks for your hard work, if I can get a game going this summer I’ll be subscribing for sure!
    ~Andrew

  43. Daneic says:

I bought the lifetime membership today since your tools are invaluable for me and the guys I RP with. Since a lot of the groundwork seems to be done in you pathfinder npc creator, are you thinking about making a Pathfinder character/character sheet -creator? I would pay for that at least :)

    Keep up the good work.

  44. admin says:

    Hi Daneic,
I have been thinking of creating a Character Generator for Pathfinder. I’m working on auto filling the feats and spells at the moment.
    Paul

  45. JFurlong says:

Thanks for adding the feature that automatically designates feats. Its really fantastic, speeds things up no end!

Will we see the same for spell selections? And do you have any plans to make skill ranks adjustable?

    Thanks again, James

  46. admin says:

    Hi JFurlong,
Next I am planning in adding a few more Pathfinder Classes. I am looking into adding in auto spells. Not yet any plans for changing skills. If you see anything wrong with the auto feats let me know.
    Paul

  47. Xanril says:

This is an amazing generator, I have been wanting to do something like this for quite a while. If you wanted some help adding in additional classes from things outsite the SRD I would love to help.

  48. admin says:

    Hi Xanril,
I can’t add anything outside the SRD for D&D 3.5 as Wizards of the Coast may try and take down the site as I’d be breaking the copyright.
In Pathfinder RPG nearly every thing is SRD so there is no problem adding material.
    Paul

  49. Asmodeus says:

    Hi all.
Tnx to this Website Tool cuz is really very usefull!
I’ve tried a tons of others tools but they’ve too mutch useless stuffs to create sumply NPC or upgrade mobs.

Anyway, apart this, i’ve to appoint a think (or simply just ask if in future will be upgraded, or if ther’s a way to do): ther’re too few prestiges class to use.
Indeed, to create a simple custom NPG is perfect, but what about if i would create something different and more competitive for my party?
Make the base NPC and add manually the prestige class is an hard work if as master u’ve to create a tons of npc.
Cuz PrestigesClasses are databased, is possible in a not so far future add every other PrestigeClass of 3.5? :D

Apart this, thanks for the job u’ve made till now ^^

  50. admin says:

    Hi Asmodeus,
Is there any specific prestige class you want adding first?
At the moment I’m adding in more feats to the Pathfinder Generator. I can add some more Prestige classes next.
    Paul
